The Circumcision of Christ & St. Basil the Great | New Year Homily (Jan 1)

Jan 1, 2026

Sensus Fidelium

On January 1, the Holy Church celebrates two profound and deeply connected feasts: The Circumcision of Our Lord, God, and Savior Jesus Christ, and the memory of our Holy Father St. Basil the Great. In this homily, we reflect on the theological, historical, and spiritual meaning of Christ’s circumcision on the eighth day after His Nativity, the fulfillment of the Law, and its connection to Holy Baptism as the new covenant. The sermon also explores why this feast coincides with New Year’s Day, revealing the Church’s call to a renewal of the heart and the “circumcision of the soul.” We also commemorate St. Basil the Great, Archbishop of Caesarea, one of the greatest Fathers of the Church—defender of Orthodoxy, author of the Divine Liturgy bearing his name, and a spiritual giant whose teachings continue to shape Christian life. Drawing from the wisdom of St. Theophan the Recluse, this message challenges us to see January 1 not merely as a calendar change, but as the beginning of a new spiritual year, a time to repent, recommit, and rebuild our lives on new foundations in Christ. “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.” (Galatians 6) May this reflection inspire us to begin the year not as slaves to the world, but as servants of Christ, walking in renewal, repentance, and hope. ☦️ Blessed is the Kingdom of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Meditation on the Holy Name of Jesus | January 1st | Octave of Christmas ~ St. Alphonsus

Jan 1, 2026

Sensus Fidelium

Enter deeply into a traditional Catholic meditation for January 1st, within the Octave of Christmas, focusing on the Holy Name of Jesus—the Name above all names, given by God Himself through the angel Gabriel. This meditation reflects on the profound teaching of Sacred Scripture, St. Bernard, and the Church: “Thy Name is as oil poured out.” The Holy Name of Jesus is revealed as: ✨ Light to the mind — delivering souls from the darkness of error to the light of faith 🍞 Food to the heart — nourishing love, courage, and perseverance 🕊️ Medicine to the soul — strength against temptation and victory over the enemy You will hear how the invocation of Jesus’ Name: Converts hearts Strengthens souls in temptation Consoles in suffering Inflames divine love Leads to salvation The meditation concludes with traditional Catholic affections and prayers, entrusting the soul to Jesus and Mary, and begging for the grace to die with their Most Holy Names upon our lips.
